Zur Burgstiege

The House

Small, charming, cosy, individual, family-run — a historic half-timbered house right on the winding path up to Schloss Burg.

How it all began

From half-timbered house to hotel

As the owners of the Dürpellos in Solingen-Unterburg, we were asked again and again by guests where to stay in beautiful Unterburg. That gave us the idea of turning a historic half-timbered house into a small, charming, cosy and slightly different hotel.

A story of its own

Above the front door, the inscription from the year it was built is still there today (in Early New High German):

„Gott Bhüt diß Hauß man weib ond Kind vor Feur gewässer und Sturmwindt auffdaß es nit mehr mitt der That Erfahr was es erfahren hat …“
ANNO 1665: IHAACPFTAA

In English: “God protect this house, man, wife and child from fire, flood and storm wind, so that it may never again experience in deed what it has experienced …”

The school “Am Berge”

Before guests stayed here, this was the school “Am Berge”: in 1740 the Lutheran congregation set up a schoolhouse, a teacher’s flat and a boarding school in the houses at Schlossbergstraße 24 and 26. An old plaque tells the story.

The plaque in English

1740 The Lutheran congregation acquires this house “Am Berg” and fits it out as a schoolhouse (Schlossbergstraße 16 – today 26) and with a teacher’s flat and boarding school (Schlossbergstraße 24).

02.05.1793 The married couple Heinrich/Moll endow the Lutheran school with a capital of 300 thalers for teaching poor schoolchildren.

01.10.1819 Rütger vom Werth from Burg is appointed teacher of the Protestant school. His letter of appointment describes the teacher’s goals and duties: the children are to be raised to be “useful people, capable citizens and devout Christians”. The teacher is to treat the children of wealthy and poor parents “with equal love” and to pay “particular attention” to the latter.

1826 The school is described in the original cadastral map as a Latin school. It contains only one classroom (No. 26), which over the years becomes so dilapidated and worn that a new school is needed. Several decades pass before then.

Breakfast

Breakfast next door

Every overnight stay includes breakfast. Right next to the Burgstiege, also in a beautiful half-timbered house, is our little Bistro zur Burgstiege — that is where it awaits you.

Don’t feel like going out? For everyone who would rather not leave their cosy spot, the Burgstiege has a small but well-equipped kitchen.

And later on, it is worth heading to our Dürpellos: that is where the Bergish coffee table is served. dürpellos.de

Breakfast by arrangement: Monday to Friday 7:00–10:00, Saturday and Sunday 8:00–11:00. We are happy to take individual wishes into account. Outside breakfast times the bistro is closed.
