To Schloss Burg
If you want to shorten the climb: the Seilbahn Burg covers the 91 metres of altitude from Unterburg to Oberburg. It opened in 1952 as the first passenger cable car in North Rhine-Westphalia and ends in an underground top station near the castle. The valley station is at Hasencleverstraße 2; tickets are only available there and only for cash.

In the heart of Unterburg, the Brezelmann commemorates the pretzel bakers of old: the Verschönerungsverein Burg (local beautification society) erected this monument to them in 1989. The pretzel men, also called Kiepenkerle, often walked for days through the Bergisches Land with their wicker baskets full of pretzels.

Unterburg enchants with old half-timbered and slate houses in the “Bergish triad” of colours — and with a bit of luck you can still hear people on the street “klönen” (chatting).

Donated by August Diederichs in 1896, the octagonal pavilion in neo-Romanesque style sits enthroned above the Wupper. Its ceiling is decorated with municipal coats of arms and mottos, and as its founder wished, it is open to everyone at any time of day or year. It can be reached on foot in a few minutes from Oberburg and Unterburg — at the top a lovely view of Schloss Burg and parts of Unterburg awaits.
More about the Diederichstempel (German)
Walking upstream along the Wupper from Unterburg, you reach the second Diederichstempel from 1901. From the top you have a breathtaking view of the Müngstener Brücke from 1897 — at 107 metres the highest railway bridge in Germany.
More about the Müngstener BrückeSchloss Burg and the Müngstener Brücke are among the sights of the Bergisches Land Nature Park. It was founded in 1973 and covers 2,027 square kilometres between the Wupper and the Sieg, from the Sauerland to the gates of Cologne. Typical are the ups and downs of the green hills, many river and stream valleys and 17 reservoirs.
